In Freeport, Maine, just north of L.L. Bean’s flagship store, the state’s scenic Route 1 becomes Main Street, where most of the town’s businesses are located.

In 2006, Melissa Ellsworth, owner of Leapin' Lizards, moved her business from Brunswick, Maine to this location.

Ellsworth was a district manager for a supermarket chain when a friend coaxed her during a “long Maine winter” to attend a tarot class. While she had practiced yoga and meditation, the tarot class made her consider opening her own New Age store.

“There were no stores like this and I told my husband, ‘I bet a store like this will do well,’” she said. Fourteen years later, she has two locations, here and in Portland, Maine.

As her website declares, at Leapin' Lizards “we help individuals find their path to growth, enlightenment and joy. We recognize and embrace the many different paths that people follow. We create a positive, compassionate and fun environment.”

The store’s name came about because lizards are a symbol of spirituality and good luck. Ellsworth wanted a name that was, “fun, light and memorable.”

Leapin' Lizards offers products and services. Among the store’s offerings are books, crystals, jewelry and aromatherapy. They also offer a variety of events, classes and services for mind, spirit and body.

Customers come in to “de-stress and feel better,” says Ellsworth, “we’re like a little oasis.”

Their services calendar is filled with events such as daily psychic readings, holistic healings, astrology readings, past life regressions and visits by authors. It’s enough  to keep anyone engaged throughout the year, let alone those “long Maine winters.”
